Street Lighting Columns
Stainton Metal manufacture virtually every size and shape of street lighting column available, and these are briefly detailed below.
Galvanised Steel Street Lighting Columns
Galvanising is now the industry standard corrosion protection system. The majority of the lighting column products sold by Stainton Metal are manufactured from steel sheet or tube, which are then galvanised to BS EN 1461:1999.
Octagonal Lighting Columns - Thames
Octagonal (8 sided) tapering sheet steel lighting columns for mounting heights from 3.5 to 18m, these are available in planted root or flange plated versions along with a large variety of bracket arm options.
Conical Lighting Columns – Avon
Stainton Metal have 2 separate sets of taper tooling which allows the design and manufacture of a full range of tapered products. These tapering conical columns are available in mounting heights from 4m to 12m and are available with a wide range of bracket arms options. As per the octagonal column range they are available as planted root or flange plate options. Conical columns can be supplied with either an overlapping or flush fitting door which accentuates the smooth silhouette of this product range.
Stepped Tubular Columns – Metro
These columns are manufactured from 2 differing diameter tubes, with the base section being swaged and welded to the shaft. The shaft is supported internally by a heavy duty washer welded to both base and shaft sections to create a strong intermediary joint.
These lighting columns are available in mounting heights from 3m to 18m and are again available with a full range of bracket arm options and are available in either a planted root or flangeplated versions, with either an overlapping or flush fitting door.
Stainless Steel Street Lighting Columns
Stainton Metal are continually looking at ways of improving and developing products to anticipate customer’s requirements and as a result of this proactive approach they now manufacture a range of stainless steel lighting columns. These columns are corrosion resistant, light and easy to handle, vandal resistant and require a minimum of maintenance.
These lighting columns carry a 70 year design life guarantee backed up by a 70 year corrosion guarantee from the stainless steel supplier Avesta Polarit of Sheffield.
The extensive range of stainless steel lighting columns covers: -
Severn – Octagonal tapering from 3m to 15m in mounting height,
Mersey – Multi sided tapering Column from 8m to 15m, and
Conway – Conical tapering Column from 5m to 12m heights.
All of these columns are available in planted root or flangeplated versions and with a number of bracket arm options.
These Stainless Steel Lighting Columns are manufactured and designed in accordance with the British Standard BS 5649 and where appropriate comply with the Highways Agency Specification BD26/99.
These Lighting Columns will all fully comply with the new European Standard EN40, which will shortly replace BS5649.
Aluminium Street Lighting Columns
Aluminium lighting columns are manufactured using a very different process to steel lighting columns; they are extruded from tube to form cylindrical sections into which door openings and cable entry slots are then cut. The columns are then heat treated by annealing in an oven and then an anti corrosion root treatment is applied.
Conical aluminium lighting columns are available in mounting heights from 3.5 to 15m and can be supplied in either planted root or flangeplated versions and with a complete range of bracket arms. Aluminium columns are normally supplied with a flush fitting door opening.
All Stainton Metal Aluminium Lighting Columns are manufactured and designed in accordance with the British Standard BS 5649 and where appropriate comply with the Highways Agency Specification BD26/99.
These Lighting Columns will all fully comply with the new European Standard EN40, which will shortly replace BS5649.

Rei-Lux Lighting Column Testing
There are approximately 6.2 million lighting columns installed on public roads and footpaths, not to mention sign posts, trafficsignal poles and telecommunication poles. These poles are constantly exposed to external attack from wind, acid rain and or contaminated ground, traffic vibration, salt spray, stray electrical currents and dog urine.
However, Structural Integrity varies from column to column with deterioration rarely visually apparent.
The Rei-Lux measuring technique, can provide accurate information about the structural integrity of each column tested in situ, and if approved, a certificate of assurance valid for 5 years is issued which offers public liability insurance up to £5 million per incident, covering any damage caused by the column failure within a 5 year period.
